Department of Forensic Medicine
The Department of Forensic Medicine at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital integrates medicine with law and ethics. It provides essential education on medico-legal responsibilities, postmortem analysis, toxicology, and medical ethics, enabling students to practice medicine with legal clarity and ethical accountability.
The curriculum includes topics like medical jurisprudence, forensic pathology, injury analysis, identification methods, toxicology, and legal duties of doctors. It equips students to deal with medico-legal cases (MLCs) such as unnatural deaths, assaults, poisoning, and sexual offenses with scientific accuracy and empathy.
The department is supported by a modern mortuary complex, cold storage facility, and autopsy room equipped with audiovisual systems for demonstrations. Students actively participate in observational postmortem examinations, learning techniques of external and internal examination, injury evaluation, and sample collection for forensic analysis.
Hands-on sessions include:
-
Age estimation via skeletal and dental examination.
-
Assessment of injuries and weapon analysis.
-
Interpretation of asphyxial deaths, burns, and blunt force trauma.
-
Handling of legal documentation like medico-legal reports, certificates, and chain of custody forms.
The Forensic Toxicology Lab teaches students how to detect poisons and drugs from biological samples using chemical and instrumental techniques. Students also get introduced to forensic DNA profiling and toxicokinetics.
Emphasis is placed on medical ethics, professional misconduct, patient rights, consent, confidentiality, and end-of-life care. Simulated courtrooms and mock trials help students understand the role of medical professionals in the judicial system.
Faculty are involved in forensic research related to injury pattern analysis, substance abuse, and ethical violations. Students are encouraged to attend medico-legal workshops, participate in interdepartmental conferences, and engage in awareness programs related to sexual violence, mental health, and substance abuse.
The Department of Forensic Medicine is committed to producing competent physicians who understand their medico-legal duties and uphold the highest standards of ethical practice in their professional lives.
