Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital plays a central role in public health education, promoting disease prevention, health awareness, and community-oriented care. It trains students to identify and manage health problems at the population level, making them agents of change in the healthcare delivery system.

This department introduces students to epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health programs, immunization strategies, nutrition, occupational health, reproductive health, and health policy planning. The aim is to integrate medical knowledge with public health principles to improve community well-being.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, community field visits, health surveys, health education campaigns, and interactive group discussions. Students are posted to the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) and Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), where they gain practical exposure by participating in:

  • Maternal and child healthcare services.

  • Immunization drives.

  • School health programs.

  • Family planning counseling.

  • Sanitation and hygiene education.

They also conduct household surveys, analyze disease patterns, and propose actionable interventions based on local health data.

The department features a well-equipped Public Health Lab, Nutrition Lab, Museum, and Biostatistics Lab. These facilities help students understand the impact of environmental factors, malnutrition, waterborne diseases, and vector control methods.

Regular workshops and sessions are conducted on:

  • Outbreak investigation.

  • Disaster preparedness.

  • Health policy evaluation.

  • Research methodology.

Faculty members are actively involved in research on community nutrition, infectious disease surveillance, maternal-child health, and the evaluation of national health programs like RNTCP, NACP, and NPCDCS. Students are encouraged to participate in ICMR STS projects, health exhibitions, and public health rallies.

The Department of Community Medicine fosters an understanding of preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative healthcare, aiming to create socially responsible and community-focused doctors who are not only clinically competent but also public health advocates.
