Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at Shri Gangaram Medical College & Hospital plays a pivotal role in bridging basic sciences with clinical medicine. As an integral part of the first professional MBBS curriculum, Biochemistry empowers students to understand the molecular basis of human physiology and disease. The subject equips future doctors with essential knowledge about biomolecules, metabolism, enzymology, clinical chemistry, nutrition, molecular biology, and genetics.

Our department features modern, well-ventilated laboratories with high-precision instruments such as colorimeters, spectrophotometers, flame photometers, ELISA readers, centrifuges, and semi-auto analyzers. These tools enable students to carry out various biochemical estimations and analyses critical to understanding health and disease processes.

Teaching methodology involves interactive lectures, case-based discussions, hands-on lab sessions, and tutorials. Students are trained to analyze clinical conditions such as diabetes, liver dysfunction, renal failure, lipid disorders, and hormonal imbalances through biochemical principles. Clinical case correlations are integrated into every topic, enhancing their diagnostic thinking from an early stage.

We promote the concept of self-directed learning, encouraging students to explore molecular pathways, understand biochemical markers, and relate them to real-world clinical scenarios. The department regularly organizes quizzes, seminars, and journal clubs to foster active academic engagement.

Our faculty consists of seasoned academicians and researchers who guide students through various ICMR-funded projects and college-level research initiatives. Areas of ongoing research include oxidative stress, metabolic syndrome, cancer biomarkers, and gene expression studies. We take pride in our student participation at national conferences and symposia, where many have won accolades for their scientific presentations.

A key strength of the department is our Clinical Biochemistry section, which serves as an essential diagnostic wing of the hospital. Students are exposed to real patient samples, enabling them to learn sample handling, lab safety protocols, and interpretation of laboratory results.

Incorporating technology into education, we use digital tools, online assessments, and simulation-based learning to make biochemical concepts more relatable and easier to grasp. Our learning resources include e-books, animations, virtual labs, and LMS platforms for round-the-clock access.

The Department of Biochemistry is committed to nurturing inquisitive minds and cultivating a scientific attitude among budding doctors. Our ultimate goal is to produce physicians who are well-versed in the biochemical underpinnings of diseases and capable of utilizing diagnostic tools efficiently and ethically.
